In the Dark
16 × 20 inches | Oil on canvas | 2019
In the Dark was created through an experimental process that transformed an ordinary still life into something luminous and unfamiliar. The composition was made entirely of white objects, surrounded by colored lights and painted after the overhead lights had been extinguished.
In the darkness, the objects seemed to awaken. Colors reflected across their surfaces, causing familiar forms to glow as though illuminated from within. What began as a study of light and shadow became an exploration of how darkness can reveal colors and details that daylight often conceals.
This piece encouraged me to step beyond my usual process and embrace uncertainty. Through that experience, I discovered a strange beauty in creating without full clarity—trusting the light to emerge from the dark.
