Comet’s Passing
16 × 20 inches | Acrylic on canvas | 2022
Comet’s Passing is a tribute to my beloved cat, Comet, who passed away in August 2023. I rescued him from outside my home when he was only a kitten during my first year of art school, and from that moment on, he became a constant companion throughout my creative journey. He would quietly watch as I painted, eventually curling up nearby and falling asleep as the hours passed.
On the night of his passing, a meteor was recorded soaring across the West Virginia sky. In the midst of my grief, it felt like a final sign from him—a brilliant light crossing the darkness, assuring me that he had found peace somewhere beyond my reach.
The gazebo was inspired by Thomas Kinkade’s Pools of Serenity, creating a dreamlike sanctuary where memory, grief, and hope could exist together. This painting holds an especially tender place in my heart, preserving the love I shared with a truly once-in-a-lifetime friend.
